Gusts 60 MPH Possible: First High Wind Warning of Season for Washington / Oregon Coast

(Manzanita, Oregon) – Raucous times are in store for the upper half of the Oregon coast and southern third of the Washington coast, with gusts up to 60 mph coming, and maybe higher. It's where – like much of the Pacific Northwest – an atmospheric river is set to drench the region, but it also brings high wind warnings to the coastlines. It's the first real high wind event of the season.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the high wind warning for the areas of Florence through to Ocean Park, in effect from midnight tonight (November 3) to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Gusts up to and maybe beyond 60 mph are possible, especially along beaches and headlands which are far more exposed.

“South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected near beaches and headlands,” the NWS said. “ Areas just inland including most coastal communities are likely to see maximum winds gusts closer to 50 mph.”

The high wind warning area includes Long Beach, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Pacific City, Lincoln City and Newport, among others.

There is no such warning or heavy winds for the southern Oregon coast, from Reedsport south to Brookings.

The NWS said winds this high can blow down trees and damage power lines.

“Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”

Although there are various marine craft warnings and watches at sea, high waves are not expected on the beaches of the Washington coast or Oregon coast.

This will still be a prime weekend to watch slightly larger-than-usual waves from an oceanfront property and listen to the wind and rain batter the exterior.

The NWS said the brief of appearance of a funnel cloud or two is possible in the western parts of both Washington and Oregon over the weekend.
