Ethereal Oregon Coast Lodging Moment: Cannon Beach, Arch Cape Published 11/05/2010 (Cannon Beach, Oregon) - It's not just a stunning example of architecture – arguably one of the most intensely intriguing on the Oregon coast – but it’s a quaint BnB that doubles as a five-star restaurant. It’s called Arch Cape Inn and Retreat, and it’s a serious castle that occupies a small bluff on the eastern side of Highway 101 in Arch Cape, which is just a tad south of Cannon Beach. Driving up to this grand structure fills the brain with all sorts of historical and fantastic notions, conjuring everything from chivalrous knights and Camelot to the exploits of French royalty, to a place Peter Lorre would be waiting behind the door. Spires pierce the sky, but not the battlements of old, rather these are layered in the weathered wood typical of the Oregon coast. Inside, it’s a bevy of antiques and rooms that ooze Old World antiquity meets an upscale beach experience. One room – nicknamed the “sexiest room on the Oregon coast” - even features a Roman-themed semi-open shower spa/area, again mixing modern luxury with the gleefully historic. Other rooms have names that borrow from history and art, like Gauguin, the “tapestry room” or the ominous “tower room,” which is really the highlight of this place. Breakfast is served in the mornings, and ecstatic lunches and dinners are served later, by reservation. Look for East Ocean Rd., just north of the Arch Cape Tunnel.
