(Seaside, Oregon) – The land up at the top of the Oregon coast keeps the winter fun momentum going with a bevy events around Cannon Beach, Seaside and Astoria. December, January and February bring a particular warmth to the region, with history, musicals, a unique winter Nordic market and that famed Fisher Poets gathering at the cusp of spring.

December 26. History and Hops: The History and Restoration of the Tourist 2 Ferry. Long before the Astoria-Megler bridge opened in 1966, a feisty riverboat captain faced off against the mighty railroad barons to open up transportation between Oregon and Washington. December 27 – 31. Winter Whale Watch week. Volunteers are placed along dozens of high vantage points along the Oregon coast to help you spot whales. On the north Oregon coast and Washington coast you’ll find them at Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach and Cape Disappointment in Washington. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. WhaleSpoken.Wordpress.com.

December 31. New Year’s Eve Brewer’s Ball. Enjoy live music from the classic rock cover band Running With Sissors while enjoying SISU beer, a photo booth, contests and a balloon drop. January 16. A Deadly Wind: The 1962 Columbus Day Storm. Winter lecture series will kick-off on Thursday, January 16 at 4:00 p.m. with a presentation by author and historian, John Dodge. Dodge will be talking about his latest book, “A Deadly Wind: The 1962 Columbus Day Storm.” The book is a non-fiction account of the strongest windstorm in West Coast recorded history. The storm killed dozens, injured hundreds, damaged more than 50,000 homes and leveled enough trees to build a million homes. 4 p.m. Cannon Beach History Center & Museum. 1387 S. January 31. Mother Son Dance. Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts and Mother Figures are all invited to attend this memory making event with a special young man (or young men) in their life. February 28 – March 1. Fisher Poets Gathering. The Evening Reading Schedule begins downtown at 5 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. at seven venues: the Astoria Brewing Company, the Columbian Theater, Fort George Brewery, KALA, the Labor Temple Diner and Bar, the Liberty Theatre and the Voodoo Lounge. All sort of friendly revelry will follow at most: concerts, dances, singing circles, poetry slams and contests. Event buttons good for admission all weekend are $15, available at the door.
