the latest weather updates are here Big Waves and Wind for Oregon Coast, Maybe 95 mph Published 02/16/2014 (Oregon Coast) – More massive winds are about to hit the Oregon coast tonight and tomorrow, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a high wind warning in effect until 10 a.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, gargantuan waves are making a spectacle on the coast, with offshore wave height being measured at more than 25 feet. The NWS said the high wind warning encompasses the north and central Oregon coast as well as the coast range passes. Winds have already damaged at least one attraction.
South winds are expected to pick up later Sunday night with gusts perhaps as high as 95 mph (although forecasters differ on this, saying peak gusts anywhere from 65 to 95). Sustained winds are likely to be around 35 to 45 mph, but the NWS said the highest speeds are expected on the north coast. Areas affected are Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi, Oceanside, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Vernonia, Depoe Bay, Newport and Yachats. Waves have been enormous during this holiday weekend, bringing a few more people out to the Oregon coast than usual. Tides have not been particularly high, which has allowed beachgoers a little more opportunity to check out the watery chaos. Keith Chandler, manager of Seaside Aquarium, had been keeping an eye on the big surf throughout the day. “It was a boiling cauldron of death out there,” Chandler said. The holiday brought out a few more folks to the beaches, he said, but the storm kept many of them from going out. Heavy winds Friday tore down the tents in Newport for the upcoming Newport Seafood and Wine Festival, happening next weekend. Crews will have to wait until Monday's storm passes to put them up again, but Newport Chamber director Lorna Davis said this will not affect the Thursday opening of the event. Part of Highway 101 near Reedsport was closed because of a land slide, and these weather conditions present a further danger for moving hills on other parts of Highway 101 or the coast range.
