Bluegrass Fest Livens Up Oregon Coast This Weekend
(Nehalem, Oregon) – One of Oregon's largest bluegrass festivals happens near the tiny town of Nehalem, on the Oregon coast. Nehalem Bay Winery's Bluegrass 'n' Barbecue takes place August 15, and draws in hundreds for an outdoor concert filled with families and lots of toe-tappin’. This year’s roster of bands is locals Floating Glass Balls and Small Towne Bluegrass Band. Admission is $15 with dinner; $5 for music only. Food begins at 5 p.m. Music starts at 6 p.m. The barbecue feast will include some seafood specialties and marinated chicken – all cooked outdoors by famed north coast chef Wes McMillen, along with a variety of sides and fixins’. In previous years, the Bluegrass ‘n’ Barbecue was held in conjunction with a bluegrass summer camp in Manzanita, but since that was dismantled two years ago the festival is now a stand alone event. Floating Glass Balls is a Cannon Beach staple, playing a combination of traditional bluegrass mixed with tunes that meld different genres. They’ve nicknamed it “beachgrassy.” Along with the more straight ahead numbers, Floating Glass Balls throws out surprises like a little bit of reggae, or tunes from big names like Chris Hillman, Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan. They recently released their third album. www.floatingglassballs.com Small Towne Bluegrass Band hails from Astoria, and is comprised of Randy Weese, Brad Griswold, Dave Elliott, and Tygh Trachsel. http://www.myspace.com/smalltownebluegrassband At Nehalem Bay Winery.
