A Pub Crawl and Food, Wine Fest for North Oregon Coast Published 02/06/2011 (Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Fine food, fine wines and a regular good ol’ time at local bars are on tap in March in Cannon Beach with two large and growing festivals. The Savor Cannon Beach Wine & Culinary Festival happens March 10 to 13, while the Cannon Beach Pub Crawl kicks off the month. The third annual Cannon Beach Pub Crawl 2011 happens March 1 – a Tuesday. They’re calling it a chance to “jumpstart” the north Oregon coast town from within and wake the place up from its winter hibernation. But in essence, it amounts to a larger-than-normal group filling the bars of the town, and a few places acting as bars that aren’t normally in that business. In any case, it's a hoot and a much beloved tradition in just the three years it’s come into existence. While geared towards lifting the spirits of locals, it’s the kind of drinking festival that is sure to catch on with visitors as well, and likely to snowball in a big way in coming years.
The way the pub crawl is done – well, there is no one way. But generally, folks tend to start at the north end of town and work their way south. The final destination usually winds up the Warren House in the Tolovana area of Cannon Beach. “There is no start and there is no finish,” said Joel Bernhard, one of the festival’s organizers. “But make sure you try and get to as many establishments as possible.” You can pay for drinks and meals any method you want, but part of the tradition here is that in order to signify you’re part of it, you pay in gold coins. You can exchange regular money for the gold coins at any of the participating establishments along the way. This event hinges on safety of everyone involved and anyone moving through town, so Bernhard urges you find a way to get around safely and do not drive. The Cannon Beach shuttle will be running all day on this Tuesday. Participating this year are the regulars: Bill’s Tavern, The Warren House Pub, Driftwood Inn, Cheri’s (cookie company), The Bistro, The American Legion, Pizza A’ Fetta, Doogers and Cannon Beach Fultano’s. All of these will be doing something special. New additions to the list are Cannon Beach Hardware (which already has a bar), Lush Wine Bar and Season’s Café.
Lush will feature live music from local Grace Saad from 6 to 8 p.m. “The purpose of the pub crawl is to remind us of at least a couple of reasons why we love this town,” Bernhard said. “This year, we hope everyone that participates will discover a few more.” The pub crawl also features commemorative hoodies for $30 that can be purchased prior to the event. T-shirts will also be available for $10 with purchase of a hoodie. These can be pre-ordered at any of the participating establishments, and the clothing will arrive before the event date. Later, on March 10 to 13, Cannon Beach hosts a massive food fest with the Savor Cannon Beach Wine & Culinary Festival, featuring a weekend of wine tastings, wine pairing dinners and a wine walk. Indulge in the weekend by purchasing a glass for $25, which gets you into a series of local businesses that will be spotlighting Oregon and northwest wineries. It’s the fourth year for the Winter Wine Tour part of the event, and all proceeds benefit the Cannon Beach Children's Center. Wineries you’ll find include Hawks View Cellars, Pamplin Family Winery, Rex Hill, Willamette Valley Vineyards, J. Scott Cellars, Zerba Cellars, Sineann Winery, Trium and Pleasant Hill. Things kick off on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. with the Oregon versus Washington Wine Throwdown, where the public votes on which is their favorite between the two states. Various wine tasting seminars happen throughout the weekend, as well as a sparkling wine tasting. A bevy of restaurants host special wine dinners, including Newman’s at 988, Arch Cape Inn and Retreat, EVOO Cannon Beach Cooking School and Inspired! Café at DragonFire Gallery, among others. Some will feature live music. While various galleries will host wine tastings, so will some other Cannon Beach businesses, such as Bruce’s Candy Kitchen, Cannon Beach Bakery, Sundance General Store at Sea Ranch Resort and Cannon Beach Bookstore. Puppy Love will feature a special tasting for pets. See the Cannon Beach events page for more information about the event. Arch Cape Inn and Retreat dining room.
