Central Oregon Coast in May: Events in Yachats, Depoe Bay, Newport Published 04/21/2011 (Newport, Oregon) – As spring comes barreling in along the central Oregon coast, the towns of Newport, Depoe Bay and Yachats light up with a variety of events (above: Yachats at night). May 6. Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra Spring Concert. 7-9 p.m. Yachats Commons, Hwy 101 & W. Fourth St. Yachats, Oregon. www.occo.ws/index.html. May 7. Rick Brown from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Rick Brown will give a slide presentation about the activities and responsibilities of NOAA. Sponsored by the Yachats Academy of Arts and Sciences.7- 9 p.m. Yachats Commons Auditorium, Hwy 101 and W. Fourth St. Yachats, Oregon. May 7, 14, 21, 28. Interpretive Dive: Oregon Kelp Forest. Did you know there are vast underwater forests right off the Oregon coast? Bull kelp, with massive blades stretching as long as 100 feet, form an intricate aquatic habitat that is vital to the survival of many coastal species. 11-11:15 a.m. Oregon Coast Aquarium, South Beach. Fall asleep to the soothing sights of the sharks and fish swimming overhead in the Passages of the Deep tunnels. Aquarium educators take families on a scavenger hunt and provide a fun and hands-on experience. Dinner, snack and breakfast are included. Call at least two weeks in advance to register.
