Central Oregon Coast Birding Events This Week Published 02/20/2013 (Newport, Oregon) – The Yaquina Birders & Naturalists group on the central Oregon coast will be meeting in Newport tomorrow and this weekend for some events that will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys watching birds and other wildlife along the coast, including one field trip of actual guided bird watching. February 21, the group features expert Ram Papish on "Discovering Wild Borneo." Distant and exotic, the word "Borneo" conjures images of steamy rainforests and strange, secretive jungle creatures. You'll get to explore this tropical island as go in search of Borneo Bristleheads, the Rhinoceros Hornbills, orangutans, pygmy elephants and flying monkeys. The presentation is part of the Yaquina Birders & Naturalists meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Meeting Room of Central Lincoln PUD (2129 North Coast Highway) in north Newport. The cost is free and it is open to the public. For more info, call 541-265-2965. This Saturday - February 23 - the group hosts "Birding Field Trip in Toledo." Dawn Grafe, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ranger, will lead this Yaquina Birders & Naturalists field trip. Toledo has many types of habitat from freshwater sloughs to shrubby woodlands. During this trip, the group will carpool to the best birding areas and look for Red-shouldered Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Pied-billed Grebe, Hooded Merganser, Ruddy Duck, Canvasback, Ring-necked Duck, Townsend's Warbler and six different species of sparrow. This is open to the general public and the trip is free. Dress for variable weather and meet at 9 a.m. in the Toledo Dairy Queen parking lot along Business HWY 20. The field trip will last three hours. For more information call 541-961-1307. The weekend event coincides with the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival, so you will not find lodging in town. Rather look to nearby Depoe Bay, Waldport or Yachats for lodging. See the Oregon Coast Lodging page. More about the Oregon coast below, including Newport-area photos:
