(Manzanita, Oregon) – Work continues on the Necarney Creek Bridge near Manzanita after it was damaged in a vehicle crash this summer, but it's making good progress, according to Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Repairing the Necarney Creek bridge in Oswald West State Park on U.S. 101 has been a priority since a car crashed into the guardrails on August 29 and wrecked part of the sidewalk and structure of the bridge. That incident happened somewhere in the middle of the night and the damage was only discovered later in the morning, causing the bridge to be shut down for two hours on an extremely busy weekend.
It caused a major traffic headache for hours along the Oregon coast, backing up traffic for miles in either direction.
Now, ODOT said, it's coming along as rebar has been replaced, more concrete poured and other structural issues taken care of. There are still long delays happening in the area between Manzanita and Cannon Beach, however.
“Safety is extremely important to us and we are doing everything we can to ensure the rest of the bridge structure is safe to travel on,” ODOT said. “Our engineers inspected the bridge immediately after a portion of the sidewalk collapsed and they are continuing their inspections as repairs are made.”
There are still more tasks to complete but all repairs are predicted to be done with in early November. That is the good news for visitors. However, the not-so-good part is that bridge travel will still get slowed down with one lane and flaggers directing traffic.
ODOT urged caution and patience.
“We encourage all travelers to plan ahead for extra long delays and to visit TripCheck.com first to get real-time updates on traffic and impacts,” ODOT said.
At the other end of Tillamook County, work will soon begin on a part of the Oregon coast's Highway 101 next to Neskowin.
ODOT: the bridge as it was first damaged
“The Butte Creek culvert under U.S. 101 near Neskowin is in critical condition and needs to be replaced,” ODOT said. “We're replacing the existing culvert with a new bridge. This will create an easier passage for native migratory fish, like salmon. Improving fish passage aligns with our commitments to the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. “
There is an online open house where you can check what this project entails and the timelines.
