Oregon Coast Basking in Glowing Sun, Temperatures Published 08/13/2010 (Oregon Coast) – At this moment, Depoe Bay is basking in a very welcome sunshine and an even warmer business climate. After weeks of almost no sun from behind a cloudy cover that lingered almost all summer, the coast is experiencing the benefits of a weather pattern that’s bringing a major heatwave to the valley. With temps in the upper 60’s, the coast is also experiencing a curious session of monster waves, more like spring or winter. In Depoe Bay, the surf is loud and unruly, crashing in spectacular explosions against the rocks, while tourists wander in shorts and serious sunshine. It’s an interesting visual dichotomy, but a happy one. It's also a stunning turnaround from the central coast on Thursday, where a massive cloud layer layed over the edge of the continent. Even a few miles inland meant the disappearance of these cloudy conditions. At 3 a.m., Depoe Bay was smothered in fog or mist, and none of the meteor showers were visible. The ocean raged even more fiercely than it is this afternoon. Today - Friday - is indeed a 180 degree turn. At about 5 p.m., Seaside is reporting 75 degrees, Cannon Beach is 72, as are Manzanita and Wheeler. Head just a few miles south, around the Nehalem Bay, Pacific City says it’s 78 degrees, and Lincoln City and Depoe Bay are saying 69. Newport is reporting 64 degrees, and Yachats and Florence are reporting similar temperatures.
Rockaway Beach and Oceanside are reporting an astounding 88 degrees, according to The Weather Channel, but that is apparently incorrect. Tradewinds Motel in Rockaway said their computer indicates 88 degrees, but the weather stations are apparently looking at Tillamook, which is a ways inland so it will be much higher. Tradewinds said it does not feel like 88 degrees there. The farther north you go on the coast, the higher the temps. For Newport, the Weather Channel says tonight will be around 55 degrees and clear to partly cloudy. Saturday, Sunday and Monday are predicted to be in the 60’s. But the weather predictions for Manzanita – nearly 100 miles north – indicate temperatures in the upper 70’s for the weekend and Monday.
Much of the week seems to point towards similar conditions on the coast, although a trend towards more clouds may be in order later in the week. For general Oregon coast weather, click here.
