New, Exclusive Place for Wines on Central Oregon Coast (Newport, Oregon) - Ona Beach B&B and Bunkhouse is now a purveyor of fine wines - on a very limited, rather exclusive basis. The little luxury B&B has always had a large wine cellar full of wondrous examples of vino, which they have shared with guests by the glass for some time. Now, however, they are allowing guests to purchase some of their stellar collection of 550 wines. Co-owner Don Weller said some of these date back to 1998, and include wines from Australia, Italy, France, Chile and many from the U.S. The big theme for this cellar is the aging of the wines to improve taste. Weller said many of these have been aged four to five years, and this adds to the enjoyment, making for a wine that was even better than when Weller acquired it. “It’s like you’re buying a ten- to twenty-dollar wine, but you’re actually drinking a twenty- to thirty-dollar wine,” Weller said. “Cellar conditions are optimum: cool, humid and dark in our undercroft. We've always poured a complimentary glass for guests. We are now opening our cellar for purchase of most wines.” This does not mean they are open to walk-in traffic for wine sales: you must be a guest in order to purchase these. There are also many famous wine labels from Oregon: Abiqua Wind, Anne Amie, Ponzi Vineyards, Troon Vineyard, Argyle, Tyee and the famed Sokol Blosser Winery.
Prices range from $13 to $66. “A current featured wine is an aged Australian beauty: Lindeman's Pyrus Coonawarra, 2000 for $20,” Weller said. “Purchased from Village Market & Deli in 2004 and aged in my cellar since then.” Weller said he has one bottle left of Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin Burgundy 2005 (W.A. - 88) for $60. Wine Advocate wrote about this: "displays aromas of black cherry, fennel, black tea, and singed roasted meats, comes onto the palate bright and invigorating and with more obvious structure and tannic ‘chew’ to it than Drouhin’s other wines, and finishes with low-toned bitter suggestions and savory meatiness... This year’s collection radiates class from top to bottom." Weller said by now some of those tannins have no doubt converted to rich earth and dark fruit flavors. 14389 S. Coast Hwy.
