(Netarts, Oregon) – Earth Day and the week around it often turns the attention to the coast in Oregon – and for good reason. It's the interface between two major ecosystems and it's a section of the state among the most concerning. (Photo courtesy WEBS Netarts Bay)
Given that, the Oregon coast is often the centerpiece of action. Thus, the local group Netarts Bay WEBS is set to kick off Earth Week with their second Stewardship Day of the season at Cape Lookout State Park on Friday, April 18th, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
You can join up and dig into a particularly engaging day at the beach. In fact, WEBS is asking for volunteers.
Teaming up with park staff, WEBS aims to promote conservation and ecological restoration while encouraging community involvement. Volunteers will have the chance to participate in a variety of activities, including planting a vibrant pollinator garden featuring native species like Common Yarrow, Beach Daisy, and Western Columbine. The garden will provide crucial habitat for local pollinators and offer a splash of color for park visitors to this unique area near Oceanside and Tillamook.
Additional projects during Stewardship Day will include replanting trees in the campground area to replace earlier plantings that did not survive and continuing efforts to manage invasive ivy growth. Activities are family-friendly and designed to accommodate participants of all skill levels. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sturdy boots, long pants, rain gear, and any personal tools such as shovels or pruners, though tools will also be provided on-site.

The following day, Saturday, April 19th, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, WEBS will collaborate with SOLVE and other partners to host the annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup. Organizers describe the event as an opportunity for the community to unite in preserving the coastal ecosystem by removing litter and marine debris. Volunteers will be welcomed with warm drinks at the Schooner Restaurant's deck before heading out to clean local beaches.
Participants can find more details and register for these events by visiting Netarts Bay WEBS' website.
