Extreme Freezing Weather, Snow Update: Portland, Oregon Coast, Willamette Valley Published 02/03/2014 (Portland, Oregon) - The National Weather Service (NWS) is now getting in on the act, issuing a special weather statement about the possibilities of snow over the next few days in Portland, northwest Oregon and the coast. Meteorologists in Portland have been talking snow coming in briefly on Monday or Tuesday morning, There is the possibility of frozen streets at night during the week in many areas as temps dip down below 30 degrees to even below zero in the eastern part of the state. Mostly, however, snow is predicted for Portland come the following weekend. Some brief snow looks likely on Monday for the Oregon coast range nearer the central coast (such as Highway 18 or 22). Look for snow on north Oregon coast range highways around Saturday, although the highs will be in the 30's. The NWS said there is still much uncertainty as to how cold things will get, but the coldest period will be from Wednesday through Friday. Highs will be in the 20's and low 30's and lows in the valley while the Portland area will be in the teens after dark. Gusty east winds will kick in, however, and that will bring the chill factor even further down. The Willamette Valley will feel like below 10 degrees, the Columbia Gorge will get down around zero and the Cascades in central Oregon will approach minus 20. The NWS said confidence is high that another Pacific weather system will arrive on Saturday and bring some snow, sleet and freezing rain. Those close to the west side of the Cascades should be prepared for an extended period of very cold conditions. The Oregon coast is not predicted to get snow, but wet roads may bring icy conditions at night. In spite of the freezing daytime highs, Tuesday through Friday is predicted to be sunny along the beaches and dry at night. This includes the towns of Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Rockaway Beach, Manzanita, Tillamook, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Yachats and Newport. Regional meteorologist Steve Pierce said a very cold system originating in the arctic will sweep across the region Tuesday. “In the wake of this, temperatures will fall during day with cold easterly wind developing, especially near the Portland metro area and the Columbia River gorge,” Pierce said. “A reinforcing shot of even colder air is set to invade the area on Wednesday.” See full Oregon coast weather here, then follow the links to the individual towns of Yachats, Newport, Depoe Bay, Lincoln City, Pacific City, Oceanside, Tillamook, Rockaway Beach, Manzanita, Cannon Beach, Seaside and Astoria.
