(Astoria, Oregon) – Again, social media, fans of Astoria and various Hollywood publications have lit up like a Christmas tree with news that behind the scenes there's a real push to a sequel and / or reboot of The Goonies. (Photo courtesy Clatsop County Historical Society)
Variety and Deadline are reporting Warner Bros. has officially hired Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry, Ted K) to write a script for a new version of The Goonies, some 40 years after the original was released. Steven Spielberg and original script writer Chris Columbus are also onboard as producers for Amblin Entertainment, along with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario.
Original director Richard Donner died in 2021, and there has been no replacement named for a director as yet. His surviving wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, co-owned a production company with him, and she has signed on as executive producer.
There is also considerable conjecture on whether or not this would be a The Goonies sequel or reboot. No locations were named, so whether or not past Oregon coast locations such as Astoria or Cannon Beach would even be in the running is still just speculation.
The 1985 classic kickstarted the careers of many, featuring Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton, and several parts were filmed in Astoria. It turned the Goonies house into a celebrity in Astoria and made the town a serious Mecca for its numerous fans.
Cast members have largely been all united in their excitement for a sequel, publicly supporting not just a new installment but willing to be in it.

So far, however, this is all rather behind the scenes and no actual firm plans have been laid out.
Every few years a small report comes out of Variety or some other publication indicating a Goonies flick, but it never truly develops into anything. Oregon Coast Beach Connection has published many of these in the past – and like those, this one should be taken with a grain of salt.
The other issue with this report from other publications is they are not directly quoting anyone from Warner Bros., leaving the exact source of the information a mystery.

Goonies fandom demographics would be the first to flip out, if it were all true. The movie's 40th anniversary is this year, and that likely means a giant shindig in Astoria. See the Astoria Visitors Center site for any updates on this festival
