Oregon Coast Highlights: Graham Kerr, Bluegrass, Surfing Event Published 08/19/2010
(Oregon Coast) – Some big names will be hitting the north coast soon, such as country stars Jerry Kilgore and Melody Guy, as well as cooking legend Graham Kerr. Meanwhile, bluegrass gets feet stomping this coming weekend in Garibaldi while a major surfing event returns to Newport. This Saturday – August 21 – brings north coast band Brownsmead Flats to the Garibaldi Museum, from 6 to 8 p.m. Brownsmead Flats have been playing together on the north Oregon coast for over 20 years and feature a lively blend of folk and bluegrass - or “crab grass” - that is sure to entertain. They always create a fun atmosphere that encourages the crowd to join in. Tickets are $8 per person. A $4 discount is offered to all Friends of the Museum. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the museum.

Rogue Ales’ renowned surfing event returns September 12 and 13 to the South Beach State Park in Newport, Oregon, right next to the Rogue World Headquarters. Competitive longboarders of all ages will compete in 11 categories of surfing expertise. Free admission. Food and beverage vendors onsite.

Graham Kerr, best known for his popular 1970’s television cooking show, the “Galloping Gourmet,” has since written several books and is also a popular speaker. His focus is on serving people who want to make healthy, creative, lifestyle changes and believes that the only lasting changes are the ones that we enjoy. His life goal is “to help to convert habits that harm into resources that heal both for ourselves and others in need.”
Kerr’s seminar, 2020 - A Perfect Vision, is about personal change. “We the people not, we the puppets,” says Kerr. He poses: “What can we do to help one another find creative solutions to our present health crisis?” The seminar is about one couples’ very personal story of change based upon individual taste preferences. How they found a different way to negotiate seven of the deadliest traps known to modern man. Kerr states, “Seven deadly locks, we don’t have to decline and fall, it’s possible to improve and succeed!” The Commercial Fishermen’s Festival the biggest most informative fun-filled commercial fishing celebration in the region. Here fans will meet the Captains and crews from boats featured on “Deadliest Catch,” and cheer on the men that risk their lives to bring us seafood as they compete in the grueling Captain Phil Harris Highliner Competition for the title of Highliner of the Year. Witness a search and rescue helicopter demonstration by the US Coast Guard and see historic and modern fishing equipment worth millions of dollars. Festivities include demos, industry sales, food, music, crafts, culinary stage with celebrity chefs, and a beer garden sponsored by Astoria Brewing Company.
