Portland and Oregon Coast Weather Alert: Slick Roads for Morning Published 12/18/2013 (Oregon Coast) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Portland has issued a special weather statement saying slick roads are likely for the morning (Thursday) commute in various places around Oregon, including the Portland area, Willamette Valley, Oregon coast, coast range, and many of the Cascade foothills. The NWS said tonight's rain around the region has left the roads wet and a big freeze is coming overnight to these areas, including Highway 101 towns like Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi, Tillamook, Oceanside, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport and Yachats. The weather statement expires around 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, so any bad conditions are not expected to last long. “Temperatures early Thursday morning will drop to near or slightly below freezing as skies clear,” the NWS said. “This will create locally slick or icy roadways and sidewalks for many areas across southwest Washington and northwest Oregon. Caution is urged when traveling late tonight and early Thursday as you may encounter black ice conditions.” You can keep a close eye on road conditions along Highway 101 and through the coast range with the Oregon coast road conditions page, which contains a variety of up-to-the-minute weather and traffic information streamed straight from ODOT. Chances are Highway 101 and Oregon coast towns will get less of an impact because the coastal region is more temperate and not as cold as inland. However, the coast range passes may experience these conditions longer because of elevation and the shade provided by the forests. See Oregon coast weather here; see general Oregon weather here.
