(Bandon, Oregon) - As of Thursday, two Oregon coast icons are closed for reconstruction and remodeling. Cape Foulweather near Depoe Bay has been partially closed since earlier this year, and yesterday Bandon's Face Scenic Viewpoint closed for ongoing construction. Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) said only the parking lot and restroom will be closed at the Bandon landmark, with reopening expected on May 23. However, beach access via the stairs on the south side of the property will remain open.
Visitors are asked to follow posted signs and respect the work-zone restrictions to ensure continued access during the construction period.
The project involves repaving the parking lot and removing the existing island to create additional parking spaces. A new restroom, equipped with electricity, will be installed to meet or exceed ADA standards. Additionally, curb cutouts, parking spaces, and picnic facilities will be upgraded to ensure compliance with current ADA requirements.

“This initiative will greatly enhance the visitor experience at Face Rock,” said Park Manager Nick Schoeppner. “It includes repairing and overlaying the parking area, increasing parking capacity, replacing the outdated restroom, and improving accessibility.”

On the central Oregon coast, atop Cape Foulweather, the gift shop and at least some of the parking are shut down until some time in June. What's known as Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint will get work on its structural integrity, as well as restoration to preserve the building's historical character and increase its accessibility features.

OPRD said there will be limited to no parking at times at Otter Crest while the project goes on.
"The Lookout at Cape Foulweather" gift shop, established in 1937 and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, holds historical significance for its role in early tourism along the Oregon Coast Highway and its association with U.S. Coast Guard operations during World War II.
The $917,000 project's first phase includes:
- Exterior repairs and replacement of the roof, windows, and siding to address the aging building envelope.
- Restoration of the façade's character using siding materials similar to the original building. -
Structural repairs to strengthen the foundation and walls. Enhancements to safety and accessibility through improved entrances.
