(Lincoln City, Oregon) – One coastal event will leave you in the dark. And gleefully so. The central Oregon coast town of Lincoln City will dive into its own version of International Dark Sky Week to have a different kind of fun, but also to raise awareness of light pollution and the importance of preserving the global nighttime environment. And it will involve more glass floats.
Central Oregon Coast Friends of the Night Sky, in partnership with Community Days, Explore Lincoln City, and Lincoln City Parks and Recreation, is hosting the inaugural "Dark Skies Over Devils Lake" event at Regatta Park on Thursday, April 24, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. This free gathering welcomes attendees to an evening of storytelling and classical music beneath the stars. In celebration, Explore Lincoln City will release 30 special-edition dark sky-themed Finders Keepers glass floats along the city's seven miles of beach between April 24 and 27.
The central Oregon coast happenin' will feature some interesting aspects:
The event will include an opportunity to experience the Lyrid Meteor Shower in a setting with minimal light pollution.
Guests can also take part in a telescope observation session led by local astro-professional Sifan Kahale, offering an up-close look at celestial wonders.
Live piano performances by local musician Sweeney Gray will bring compositions by Philip Glass, Bach, and others to life. Community storytelling will invite local voices to share tales inspired by nature, place, and the mysteries of the night.
Family-friendly activities include eco-conscious luminaria crafting, dark-sky-friendly red flashlights, and a raffle with exciting prizes.
International Dark Sky Week, taking place this year from April 21 to 28, is a worldwide celebration advocating for the preservation of natural nighttime environments. The Dark Skies movement promotes responsible outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution, protect ecosystems, and enhance energy efficiency.
