It's not so much what they're doing on their own, down there in the deep of the Oregon coast. An event later this week at the Netarts Community Club looks what we are doing to look into their fascinating little world. It's an evolving ocean off this coastline, says the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS group of Tillamook County, and the October 19 event from 10 a.m. to noon dives into the realm of rockfish.
The program is called "Rockfish and the Changing Ocean," where Dr. Leif Rasmuson, the Marine Fishery Research Project Leader for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, is the visiting speaker.
The ODFW scientists and his team conducted some groundbreaking surveys of the fish's population back in 2021, utilizing acoustics and underwater video - spanning the entire Oregon coastline for the first time in state history.

Join us for an enlightening event, "Rockfish and the Changing Ocean," where we will dive into the fascinating world of rockfish and the evolving marine ecosystem off the Oregon coast.
The visiting scientist offering this presentation is Dr. Leif Rasmuson, the Marine Fishery Research Project Leader for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“This innovative research not only helped prevent drastic cuts to rockfish fisheries but also shed light on critical issues like hypoxia in nearshore waters,” said event organizers. “This research will be continued with a follow-up survey in 2025.”
On top of that, Dr. Rasmuson will present further information on various rockfish projects currently underway in Oregon’s oceans. The group will discuss the intriguing movements of Yelloweye rockfish, the behaviors of Deacon rockfish, and the concerning lack of older female Black, Yellowtail, and Canary rockfish.

The program will be of interest to marine enthusiasts, fishermen and those who are simply curious about the world around us – especially its oceans and their health. The talk will give valuable insights into the resilience and challenges of Oregon’s rockfish populations. Organizers say it will be an engaging discussion and a chance to learn more about Oregon's first statewide black rockfish survey, and how it contributed to the 2023 rockfish population estimate.
You'll need to register for details on the meeting location. There is no cost to attend this program but donations are appreciated. https://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events.
“Your donation helps in supporting the work of our organization,” WEBS said. “Every little bit helps. All of our workshops, classes, and events are free. As a non-profit organization, we rely on donations and grants to keep us going, and growing.”

WEBS said this is the kind of event that typically fills up quickly, so they ask that if you have to change your plans after registering that you inform them so they can offer your spot to someone else.
