Oregon Coast Aquarium Celebrates Migratory Bird Day
(Newport, Oregon) - The Oregon Coast Aquarium will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) Saturday, May 16 with activities focusing on migratory birds throughout the day. IMBD was created in 1993 to focus attention on one of the most important and spectacular events in the life of a migratory bird - its journey between its summer and winter homes. IMBD officially takes place on the second Saturday in May each year, but organizers recognized that this date doesn't work well for all bird event organizers, or for the migratory birds themselves, since northern birds arrive later than birds in the south. Now, IMBD is celebrated all over the world throughout April and May. Highlights include a craft in the classroom showing how to make a bird feeder and children’s book readings by Ram Papish, wildlife artist, who has spent many years studying seabirds in Alaska, Hawaii and Oregon and was the International Migratory Bird Day artist in 2005. A designated birding site on the Oregon Coast Birding Trail, the Oregon Coast Aquarium adjoins an established woodland and estuary where large numbers of both migratory and year-round species of birds can be seen. Nature trails wind through and around the Aquarium grounds as great blue herons, egrets, hooded merganzers, ducks, geese, cormorants and many others can be seen nesting, fishing or foraging nearby.
