Oregon Coast Winery Hosts Holiday Blues Fest
Headliner Norman Sylvester and opener Smokin’ Blue Band are the musical half of the day, while local chef Wes McMillen provides a special gourmet touch. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and the food is a separate cost from the $5 admission charge.
Music starts at 6 p.m., but doors are open at 4 p.m., with food being served shortly thereafter. McMillen will create a feast of pinot-marinated chicken quarters with a blackberry wine barbecue sauce, a beef brisket, along with baked beans, potato salad and watermelon. Sylvester is known as the “boogie cat,” performing a dance-inducing blend of blues and serious get down soul. The band currently consists of vocalist Gretchen Mitchell, drummer Jolie Clausen, bassist Rob Shoemaker and keyboardist Frankie "The Funk Master" Redding. Their latest CD was "A Family Affair," which has even sold a few copies overseas. Living Blues Magazine wrote about the release: “range from the burbling funk of the opening All The Funk That You Want to the Caribbean feel of Redemption Time, the soulful blues balladry of the title track, and the humor-spiced Honey Do List and Soap Opera Blues (‘the only time my woman goes into the kitchen, when she's lookin' for the remote control’). The toughest blues sounds come on the harp-backed Cheating Woman. There's a tribute to the late Paulette Davis on Soul Diva, and Sylvester closes the program on a spiritual note with a touching, but not maudlin, Mother's Prayer.”
