North Oregon Coast Music Highlights in April: Jazz, Blues and Reggae Published 04/07/2012
(Manzanita, Oregon) – Some scintillating sounds are headed to the north Oregon coast havens of Astoria and Manzanita in April, with some high-profile blues, a bit of reggae and some innovative jazz. The fun really starts in Manzanita on April 14, as Portland powerhouse blues singer Margo Tufo hits the stage at the San Dune Pub. Tufo has been a staple in the northwest for a couple of decades now, wowing folks with her gutsy renditions and remakes of standards and originals. Her list of collaborators says it all. Over the years she's worked the best and the brightest of the regional blues scene, including Robbie Laws, Renato Caranto, Chris Carlson, Jim Mesi, Chris Baum, Dover Weinberg, Randy Cannon, Jeff Frankel and Sonny Hess. Tufo has also had the honor of working with such blues legends as Etta James, Robert Cray, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Katie Webster, John Mayall and The Kinsey Report. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9 p.m. San Dune Publ. Laneda Ave. (503) 368-5080. www.sandunepub.com
Astoria venue KALA, run by the folks at Hipfish Monthly, ushers in spring with a bit of reggae and the north coast band Ma Barley on April 20. The eight-piece ensemble began as a one-time band for a Bob Marley birthday celebration has been going strong since 2007. The group is led by vocalist and wind player Mark “Meadowlark” Erickson, who steers Ma Barley firmly in the direction of infectious dance grooves and some engaging Dub stylings. Friday April 20. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5 cover.: the dance goes to midnight. No-host Bar. KALA is located at 1017 Marine Drive in Astoria. KALA is the ground floor presentation space at HIPFISHmonthly, which features monthly cultural happenings. For more info go to hipfishmonthly.com. Call 503.338.4878. End out the month with some very unique and hip jazz reworks by Portland guitarist Jason Okamoto and Manzanita classical guitarist Dimitri Swain. Both are favorites at local wine bar Vino, but they come together on April 27 at Manzanita venue the Hoffman Center. Okamoto has a very distinctive and sometimes deceptively complex style. Swain has a unique jazzy feel and is also a vocalist. The combination should be quite engaging. The event is also part art show, which begins at 5 p.m. The concert portion of the program begins at 7 p.m. Cover is $8. Laneda Ave. Manzanita, Oregon. 503-368-3846.
