It's a little like a nature walk but on your device's screen. The fun happens online on February 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., called Beaches, Birds, and Beyond: Community Science in Action at Netarts Bay.

“Participants will hear about five community science projects happening in and around Netarts Bay that are enhancing our understanding of the local environment through collaborative, participatory efforts,” said Marina Dreeben, the newly appointed Stewardship Coordinator for WEBS. “We hope anyone interested in getting involved and learning about the impacts of this work will join us to hear from the leaders of these projects.”

WEBS Director Chrissy Smith said they have been eager to have the opportunity to share with the community the outcomes of different community science projects. This and “the ways our volunteers and other local residents are working together to grow a stronger understanding of this amazing ecosystem,” said.

This event is open to both current volunteers and the general public – anyone who is interested in the Oregon coast in some way. It is tailored for those who are curious about new environmental findings, involved in community science in the Netarts Bay area and interested in learning about the impact of their work, new to community science and looking for ways to support local ecological health, and eager to stay updated on local bird and marine debris activities along the Oregon coastline.

It will prepare you for heading out to the region and have a greater knowledge of what's around you – and how to give back.

This pristine area near Oceanside, Cape Meares and Tillamook has more than a few friends.

Representatives from the following community science projects will be sharing their insights at the event: NOAA Marine Debris Mapping Project, Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) Beached Bird Survey, Bird Alliance of Oregon Snowy Plover Patrol, Bird Alliance of Oregon Black Oystercatcher Monitoring, and USFWS Seabird Productivity Monitoring Project.

WEBS has also launched a new page on their website to connect individuals with various community science projects. For more information, visit the “Get Involved” page at netartsbaywebs.org/community-science
