Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced that OR 131 will be shut down at the bridge across the Tillamook River from July 31 through August 4, only closing in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will impact both normal routes to either Netarts, Bayocean, Cape Meares or Oceanside, as the closure happens just before the beginning of Bayocean Road and Highway 131. The latter is the main route to Netarts or Oceanside, while Bayocean Rd. is the primary way to Bayocean Spit or the town of Cape Meares.

“We are replacing one of the piles – the large poles supporting the bridge – that has deteriorated,” ODOT said in a press release.

You'll want to plan ahead for those mornings on this part of the north Oregon coast, ODOT said.

“If you need to travel between U.S. 101 and Netarts, Oceanside or Cape Meares, we have a detour available for passenger cars: Use Burton Road between the Netarts Highway and Tillamook River Road south of Tillamook,” ODOT said.

The intersection is just a little over a mile south of Tillamook.

If you are coming up from the south on the Three Capes Tour, Netarts and Oceanside will be clear that way.

“We expect to finish the repairs by Friday afternoon, but reopening times may vary each day,” ODOT said.

ODOT's Tripcheck.com will have the latest road conditions, weather and closures.

Along the Northern Three Capes Tour

If you're coming from the south from areas like Cape Lookout State Park or Pacific City, this famed north Oregon coast route is taken over by the beauty of Netarts Bay. The area is very well known for crabbing, clamming and fishing. From the beginning of the bay you can see Oceanside's Three Arch Rocks in the distance.

At Netarts, a handful of businesses pop up, including eateries, a grocery and some lodgings. Just north of there you'll find Happy Camp, which hides some amazing ghost forest features. [See Happy Camp Ghost Forest]

Northward from here, the road becomes winding and full of beautiful vistas, ending up at stunning little Oceanside.
