FROM 2006: Oregon Coast Aquarium Hosts Massive Car Show on Busy Weekend

(Newport, Oregon) – Oregon’s Pacific Coast Scenic Byway will the be pathway to the Fifth Annual Labor Day Weekend Car Show at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, on the central Oregon coast, held September 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival of wheels will celebrate an array of vintage and non-vintage autos & trucks, sports cars, street rods, muscle cars, customs, imports, and classics.

Dick Miller is the aquarium’s Exhibits Technician and organizer of the show. He says it will be a holiday for “gear heads.” “There are a lot of car enthusiasts in and around Oregon,” Miller said. “This is a great opportunity for ‘gear heads’ to celebrate the holiday, show off their hot rods, and visit the Aquarium.”

Miller says it’s actually two shows in one weekend with separate shows Saturday and Sunday. “There will be a winner in every class both days - a total of 23 awards each day. This makes it easy for car enthusiasts to work more than one car show into their Labor Day weekend,” says Miller, who is an avid car enthusiast himself.

Activities include an outdoor barbeque, games and fun for the entire family throughout the weekend. Raffles and best-in-show car competitions are all part of this year’s event.

There will be around 100 vintage cars on display in the Aquarium’s main parking lot. There is a $10 registration fee per car per day. If towing a vintage trailer, it is only $5 for the entire weekend.

Since 2002, when the Department of Transportation designated Highway 101 as the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, the road has been recognized as one of Oregon’s top attractions and a destination unto itself. The designation was based upon its outstanding variety of scenic, recreational, and cultural features. “The Car Show is going to be big this year – with lots of fun things for a family to enjoy together,” says Aquarium Public Relations Manager, Cindy Hanson. “It’s a great way to end the summer with a family road trip on beautiful Highway 101, a visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and an exciting car show all in one weekend.”
