Oregon Coast Aquarium Celebrates World Ocean Day, June 8 Published 06/03/2010
(Newport, Oregon) - The Oregon Coast Aquarium will celebrate World Oceans Day Tuesday, June 8, with a day of activities to increase awareness about the Earth’s oceans and its creatures. The day will include scuba dive presentations, face painting, an ocean craft, and a presentation in the theater. In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Surfrider Foundation will offer information about their organizations and what they do to protect the ocean. All activities free with admission. No pre-registration required. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is joining forces with Dr. Seuss to create a big splash for World Oceans Day 2010. This year, Dr. Seuss's beloved children's book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, will be celebrating 50 years of entertaining kids around the world. The day will include Dr. Seuss’ One Fish themed giveaways, posters and activity books. As of 2009, World Oceans Day has been officially designated by the United Nations as June 8 each year, a significant step in conserving and protecting our oceans. The Ocean Project, working with the World Ocean Network, coordinates events and activities to promote ocean literacy in collaboration with aquariums, museums and zoos. The Ocean Project challenges people to take the Seven C’s Pledge for ocean conservation; 1) Commit to making a difference, 2) Conserve at home, 3) Consume consciously 4) Communicate interest and concerns, 5) Challenge ourselves daily, 6) Connect to community and 7) Celebrate our ocean. For more information, visit the Ocean Project website at www.theoceanproject.org This year’s theme for World Oceans Day, "Wear Blue and Tell Two" is a new way of celebrating our world's ocean. The main idea behind "Wear Blue and Tell Two" is to have people associate the color blue with World Oceans Day and multiply their positive reach by telling friends or colleagues two interesting facts about the ocean or ways one can take personal action to help. World Oceans Day Activities: The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational attraction dedicated to the highest quality aquatic and marine science programs for recreation and education so the public better understands, cherishes, and conserves the world’s natural marine and coastal resources.
