Ocean Sciences and Fossils Take Spotlight on Central Oregon Coast Published 02/02/2011
(Newport, Oregon) – The Hatfield Marine Science Center features a bevy of interesting events in February, from its “Fossil Fest” to a mind-bending set of lectures on ocean science. In the spirit of PBS’ “Antique Road Show,” the Hatfield Marine Science Center will host its 12th annual “Fossil Fest” on February 12. “Bring in your fossils or other beach finds for identification by Oregon’s preeminent paleontologist, Dr. William Orr,” said the Hatfield in a press release. Co-author of the book Oregon Fossils, Dr. Orr will also be giving a presentation at 1:30 p.m. entitled “Digging up the Kings Valley Groundsloth."
Other Fossil Fest activities include a fossil swap and special displays staffed by the North American Research Group. The Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and admission is by suggested donation. Other engaging talks are coming to the Hatfield, for those interested in the sciences of the oceans. All of these happen in the Library Seminar Room, Guin Library, inside the Hatfield. February 16, Tung-Yung Fan, who is Director of Department of Planning and Research at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium in Taiwan, will give a talk about “High resistance and resilience of Houbihu coral reef in Kenting National Park, Taiwan to environmental change.” 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
February 17 will see Kim Gould, Aquatic Biologist, SWCA Environmental Consultants, speaking on “Rapid mapping of marine habitats and fish presence using towed underwater video.” 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Library Seminar Room, Guin Library, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport On February 24, it’s Mark Albins, Ph.D., candidate, Department of Zoology, from OSU.
