Oregon Coast News This Week Published 03/26/2010 Oregon Coast Cleanup Snags 70,000 Pounds and Oddities Including Kitchen Sink. Some 4,200 volunteers hit the Oregon coast Saturday to remove an estimated 70,500 pounds of trash from the beaches – all 362 miles of it. Volunteers, through the SOLV organization, found the beaches covered with large amounts of trash and debris that had washed ashore during winter storms. Volunteers reported large amounts of rope and many bottles and glass floats from Asia at multiple beaches up and down the coast. Oddities included a wide selection of household fixtures and items, including aluminum siding, a freezer, a mattress, a cooler, and a full kitchen sink. Other curiosities included a few barbecue grills, truckliner beds, a wooden stove, and a hefty 500-pound anchor line.
New Park and Old Time Train Trips for Oregon Coast. Living history is coming as an antique railroad car takes to the coastal rails for special trips, while a new park on the central coast is tied to a stunning hotel renovation. On the north coast, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is offering two types of old school excursions for 2010. The group was established to preserve antique railroad equipment for the enjoyment of future generations, and it’s creating a unique opportunity for time travel on the rails aboard a 1910 Heisler Steam Locomotive with two different kinds of excursions this spring and summer In Lincoln City, a new park has come into existence as the Coho Oceanfront Lodge expands and reworks itself a bit. Director of operations Rob Lee said the new park was funded and built by his family, but it’s actually a part of the city’s park system. It now has official signage from the city and is called Oceanview Walk Park.
Oregon Coast Winery Celebrates Its History with Festivals. Nehalem Bay Winery celebrates its history this spring with a host of events, including its anniversary party in early April, a blues festival in May and a reggae show in June. Saturday, April 3 is the winery’s 36th anniversary party. There will be live music, wine specials, snacks and the quirky fun that the winery is known for at this family event. Music will begin at 1 p.m. The band is Kingnik – a quartet with ukeleles and kazoos performs a colorful mix bluegrass of early 20th century Vaudeville-type music. It features Curtis Chamberlain, who also plays with northwest blues artist Baby Gramps. Admission is free.
