Oregon Coast Aquarium Kicks Off New Exhibit with Spookiness (Newport, Oregon) – The big Halloween celebration at Oregon Coast Aquarium is the kickoff to the facility’s newest exhibit of Turkey Vultures. It’s a week of celebrations, October 25 to 31, also with the goal of collecting food donations for Food Share of Lincoln County. Two new turkey vultures have arrived at the Aquarium and will go on exhibit in their permanent aviary October 30. The turkey vultures, male and female siblings, are rescued birds from the Raptor Education group in Antigo, Wisconsin. The public is being asked to submit names for the birds in a turkey vulture naming contest. “The main goal for the event is to collect food for Food Share of Lincoln County,” said Cindy Hanson, Aquarium Public Relations Manager. “This year we are hoping to meet an increased demand for food during these challenging economic times.” Donations of non perishable food items will be accepted at the Aquarium. Nancy Smith, Director of Food Share of Lincoln County, also encourages cash donations. “I don’t know if many people realize how far a dollar goes. A $10 donation will buy 50 pounds of food!” Smith said she hopes the event will help to bring awareness about its mission; to alleviate hunger in Lincoln County. “This event will go a long way toward getting the community involved in the effort in a fun and meaningful way.” Food Share of Lincoln County is a community based nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger. It was founded in 1981 and serves six independent food pantries, four meal sites and six supplemental nutrition programs throughout Lincoln County. The people who use food pantries include children, working families, the elderly, retired, disabled and the homeless members of our community. Halloween Harvest Festival activities range from story telling to pumpkin carving and costume contests to a turkey vulture naming contest. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is building a turkey vulture aviary slated to open with live turkey vultures in the month of October. The Aquarium’s aviculturists will choose the winning names for the turkey vultures. The Halloween Harvest Festival is sponsored by the Newport News-Times, Yaquina Bay Communications and Dennis McManus, Jr., C.P.A.
