(Florence, Oregon) – Rollin' retro with a healthy helping of kitsch and camp: that's what's in store for the central Oregon coast burgh of Florence this weekend. Dozens of kooky trailers, gussied up in all manner of wacky exteriors takes to the roads on Saturday, October 8 with the Goin' with the Flo Vintage Trailer Rally. Some 30 or so trailers in a unique retro style will be staged for public viewing, in the return of an event that proved popular its first two years but was interrupted by the pandemic.

All this giddy fun happens at Heceta Beach RV Park in Florence from noon 3 p.m.

The majority of these trailers are restored to perfection, while some are still in the midst of that process. Look for a vintage swap 'n sell along with vintage-inspired arts and crafts for sale at the event. Onlookers get a chance to rub elbows with the owners and chat about the restoration of these carriages, open to questions about the techniques and tech involved, and giving you an idea of what it takes to keep these rare rigs in shape to keep on truckin'.

“This will be the first time in two years that the public viewing will return,” said event host Terry Hankins. “Some trailer owners come from as far as Utah, California, Idaho and Washington states. They really love Florence so they’re excited about coming back. The open house will coincide nicely with Circles in the Sand which is an intricately carved walkable mandala raked into the sand by trained artists, in front of Driftwood Shores Resort. This is just several blocks away from the trailers on Heceta Beach. It’s a fine time to come out and enjoy the area.”

Hosts, Terry and her husband Dan Hankins, are Florence residents and owners of three classic Airstreams and a 1960s Streamline. They have been vintage aficionados for quite a few years. In keeping with more Florence traditions, the couple also operates Exploding Whale Beach Camp in Florence and rents their trailers on Airbnb as an experiential alternative to traditional lodging.

The first was in 2018, which Hankins said was a sizable hit. Hundreds came to that one, she told Oregon Coast Beach Connection in 2019. Much of Old Town Florence got in on the act in that last offering, hosting plenty of vintage wares in local shops. There were also spooky-themed trailer displays and a vintage caravan that displayed a puppet show.

All of it was geared towards preserving the nostalgic road-tripping vacation era.
