No Problems Getting to Oregon Coast; Ice Issues in Gorge Published 11/26/2010 (Portland, Oregon) – The roads to and from the Oregon coast have been problem-free since the wee hours on Thursday morning, and the temperature has warmed up considerably, melting any snow left on pavement. Chains are required through the Gorge, and Oregon officials have even advised to stay clear of that area, if possible. Along coast range routes like Highway 26 or Highway 6 – which had considerable ice and snow problems earlier this week – you could say the “coast is clear.” Temperatures in the day have been up around the high 30’s with some rain, and the pavement is completely clear. Motorists are reporting no problems getting over these highways. You are still required to carry chains or traction tires, however. Quartz Creek, at MP 24 on Highway 26, is reporting 39 degrees. It’s at an elevation of 1100 feet.
The Sunset Summit, at an elevation of 1174, is reporting 42 degrees as of 2:30 p.m. ODOT’s TripCheck.com site says there have been some spots of black ice reported, so it is advisable to take things a little slower on the summits in the coast range. The winter storm warning for the Gorge, along I-84, is in effect until 10 p.m. Friday. East of Cascade Locks is a bit worse off, with a threat of freezing rain expected to last longer. But the areas around Vista House and Multnomah Falls are experiencing plenty of freezing rain and icy spots on the highway, with several incidents being reported.
