(Newport, Oregon) - For nearly 40 years, it's been a staple and boundary-breaker of Oregon's microbrew scene, as well as Oregon coast culture. Now, as of Friday, Rogue Ales & Spirits has abruptly shut down all operations in its main Newport facility – including satellite restaurants in places like Astoria and Portland.
According to the Lincoln Chronicle, Rogue management met with Port of Newport officials on Friday and announced their immediate closure, and that they would be vacating the property rented from the Port.
The company's South Beach facility alone employs about 60 people, which has created an outpour on social media of calls for assistance to those left jobless just before the holidays.
Regional media is reporting that Rogue Ales has owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in back rent and taxes to the Port of Newport and the county. Sales have reportedly dropped steadily in recent years, much of which has to do with after effects of the pandemic. In spite of remaining one of Oregon's top brewers and most recognizable brands, it suffered one of the heaviest drops in sales in 2024 at 18%.

The brewer has been renting a 47,000-square-foot space at Newport's South Beach, which includes the restaurant and warehouse. Some three employees are staying on for awhile to help clear that out, regional media reports.
Rogue already had just shut down another similarly-sized area used for distillery operations.

The brewers started their company in Ashland in 1988, then moved to the central Oregon coast a year later. Their bayfront retail / restaurant in Newport became a kind of legend in the state's drinking and culinary world as early as the '90s. For several years, the Rogue Ales property hosted a microbrew festival each fall, which often included the Duffy Bishop Band (photo here from Oregon Coast Beach Connection archives).

Rogue brewers distributed their beer to all 50 states and more than 50 countries. All that – and a good chunk of coastal culture – are going away.
