(Seaside, Oregon) - “Copious Coastal Oddities” will be the subject of the next History and Hops lecture in Seaside on December 27, with a host of fun to strange Oregon coast facts regarding history, natural science, weird weather phenomena and more. (Above: the green flash at sunset).
The Copious Coastal Oddities talk starts at 6 p.m. at Seaside Brewing Co. 851 Broadway St, Seaside, Oregon. (503) 717-5451. The presentation is free.
Andre Hagestedt, author of the Ultimate Oregon Coast Travel series, digs deeper into items across 180 miles of the states beaches, something geared not just to travelers but to locals as well. Sand that sings, the biololuminescent “glowing sands,” odd little objects found in various beach towns, to how some of these villages got their names: there’s a wide variety of trivia and items from the scientific world or local history.
Each, Hagestedt said, offers yet another means of really enjoying the beaches on another level. There’s a lot of curiosities hiding in plain sight, he said, while other facts allow you to appreciate the area even more.
Among the other discoveries attendees will make:
The green flash at sunset and how to increase your chances of finding it, plus the phenomenon's even stranger relative. What landmarks of the area were once a volcano? A look into how and when the Oregon coast was formed in the way we know it. You’ll hear about small, puzzling objects along the Seaside Prom, at Neskowin and Hug Point – and what they might mean.
Historical tidbits include the goofier sides to the story of Pixieland and Pixie Kitchen, the rough treatment of local tribes around Yachats, and the sometimes quirky tales behind how some towns got their names. There will also be a look at least one beach safety issue that is not talked about enough.
Plus much more.
Andre’ will take some items from the Ultimate Oregon Coast Travel books about Seaside, Cannon Beach and Lincoln City, and give a sneak peek into tidbits coming from other books in the series, including the upcoming releases on Yachats, Depoe Bay, Manzanita and others.
A video below previews some of the aspects talked about.
