(Portland, Oregon) – Various parts of Oregon and a small sliver of the Oregon coast are under air quality advisories through Friday, issued by Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). (Photo Oregon Coast Beach Connection: smoky haze from Russia seen on the coast several years ago)
While many of the areas under the advisories are not in bad shape at the moment (9:30 p.m. on Monday), they have been affected recently by various wildfires in the state and can be again.
DEQ has issued the advisories for large parts of the Eugene area, including Corvallis, Albany, Vida, Cottage Grove and Oakridge, among others.
In southern Oregon, the advisory areas include Roseburg, Sutherlin, Umpqua, Klamath Falls and Winchester, as well as Reedsport and Winchester Bay on the south Oregon coast.
The Portland Metro is also under an advisory, which includes Hillsboro, Gresham, Troutdale, Wilsonville and Oregon City. That area has been bad on and off in recent days, including earlier on Monday when the DEQ index had it in the orange (unhealthy for some groups) and yellow (moderate) categories.
“The Cedar Creek Fire combined with northerly winds will cause smoke concentrations to increase,” DEQ said. “Air Quality is expected to reach unhealthy levels at times within Northern Klamath and Douglas Counties.”
The affected area on the Oregon coast is – so far – limited to Reedsport and vicinity, mostly several miles of the National Dunes Recreation Area.
Areas closest to the wildfire, such as Oakridge, have been in the unhealthy category for awhile.
DEQ said these areas can change conditions rapidly, depending on weather. You can check air quality in real time at oregonsmoke.org, DEQ’s Air Quality Index, or by downloading the free OregonAIR app on your smartphone.

“Smoke can irritate the eyes and lungs and worsen some medical conditions, “ DEQ said. “People most at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and pregnant people.”

DEQ said during these events you can protect yourselves and your family by staying inside, use a high efficiency air filter, and be aware of smoke conditions wherever you are.
Those with breathing conditions should keep their medications close.
Currently, the largest amount of smoke is coming from Lane County at Cedar Cree. Other areas of Washington state's southwest area are in the middle of smaller fires as well.
