(Oregon Coast) – 362 miles of Oregon coastline and perhaps about 2,000 volunteers: that's what will create SOLVE's Beach & Riverside Cleanup on Saturday, September 25.
It's the 38th year of the event, pulling together volunteers from all over the Pacific Northwest to participate in more than 100 projects in every corner of Oregon, not just the coastline. These include beach cleanups, scouring inland areas, and habitat restoration projects. All volunteer projects aim to clean Oregon's watersheds, from source to sea, starting by picking up the litter inland – which then helps prevent marine debris downstream.
SOLVE said most volunteer projects are two to three hours in length. The majority of the beach cleanups run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. All event supplies will be provided, but volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own reusable work gloves, and a bag or bucket, to cut back on the number of disposable supplies used.
Some 36 sites along the Oregon coast will have volunteers gathering to help out, from Warrenton's wreck of the Peter Iredale down to Brookings on the south coast. Among the meeting sites are (but not limited to): Gearhart Beach, Seaside Turnaround, Nehalem Bay State Park, Rockaway Beach Lions Club, Barview Jetty, Sand Lake, Wi-Ne-Ma Wayside, five sites in Lincoln City, Beverly Beach State Park, Yachats, Carl Washburne State Park, Florence's North Jetty, Oregon Dunes, Umpqua Dunes, Bastendorff Beach near Coos Bay, Bandon, Battle Rock at Port Orford, and the rest area opposite Harris Beach State Park.

“Our SOLVE Event Leaders will check volunteers in, hand out supplies, give a run-down of the day, and provide a safety debrief, including what items to not pick up, and what items to be careful of,” SOLVE told Oregon Coast Beach Connection. “SOLVE is a network of volunteers, partner organizations, and community leaders who work together to ensure Oregon stays the clean and beautiful state we know it to be.”
One of the projects that will be taking place will be the Netarts Bay Cleanup, led by Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS and Tillamook County. Due to COVID-19 health concerns, they are encouraging only local households to sign up for this event.
Volunteers will arrive at the Netarts Bay Boat ramp at 10 a.m. After signing in, they will receive their cleanup supplies and receive a short safety debrief. Volunteers will then be encouraged to clean up along Cape Lookout State Park or towards Bay Ocean Peninsula, depending on the volunteers' interests and ability levels.
