(Manzanita, Oregon) – More north Oregon coast state parks will be opening up on Friday in both Clatsop and Tillamook counties. Big favorites that also feature now-limited camping like Fort Stevens, Cape Lookout and Nehalem Bay have been open for day use as well, but many pillars of coastal tourism that had remain closed are letting visitors back in.
Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) confirmed the list early Thursday. The following state parks resume operations on Friday:
In the Gearhart area are Del Rey Beach, Sunset Beach and Delaura Beach. Astoria / Warrenton Maps and Virtual Tours
While beaches within Cannon Beach have been accessible for awhile, the Tolovana access has technically been shut down. That opens up officially on Friday as well.
Just south of Cannon Beach, major attractions reopening are Arcadia Beach, Hug Point and the sprawling Oswald West closer to Manzanita. Cannon Beach Maps and Virtual Tours
Along the Three Capes area of Tillamook County, park accesses that swing wide their doors are:
Bob Straub at Pacific City
Munson Creek near Tillamook
Symons State Scenic Viewpoint immediately south of Oceanside
Sitka Sedge State Natural Area near Sandlake / Pacific City.
Currently, the main access at Cape Kiwanda has been open only on weekends but will soon open up completely. Visit Tillamook Coast director Nan Devlin said McPhillips Beach should resume soon as well, and Oceanside's access has always been open. This usually requires parking a ways away, however. Just about all state parks on the southern and central coast are open already. This new development brings the vast majority of beach accesses back into action.
All open state parks and campgrounds are working at a sizable deficiency, however, as the long shut downs have resulted in a major budget deficit. The agency’s largest source of funding has been lottery dollars, which have disappeared because of bar and other venue closures. OPRD is looking at around 50 or more layoffs and the inability to properly maintain facilities around the state and not just the Oregon coast.
OPRD says you must still maintain social distancing, stay home if you’re not feeling well and head somewhere else if it the area is crowded.
Because of the lack of maintenance, some restrooms and garbage collection may not be available. Make sure you plan for that possibility.
Even with these slow reopenings, OPRD is inviting everyone to participate in State Parks Day on June 6. Visitors throughout the state can come to their local state park for a day of free camping and parking.
Overnight camping is free at all tent and RV sites in open state park campgrounds for stays over the night of June 6. Day-use parking is free June 6 at the 25 parks that charge a day-use fee.
