(Oregon Coast) – Tuesday saw unusual high temperatures on the coast, and Wednesday brought a nasty heat wave to the inland area, surprising everyone and getting the coastal region ready for a flood of people flocking to the sunny conditions.

On Tuesday, temperatures caught numerous coastal residents off guard, including Trollers Lodge owner Peg Leoni in Depoe Bay. “It was sunny with little wind, so it felt lots warmer,” Leoni said. “I had to use the AC in the truck when I went to Lincoln City.”
Wednesday,
while the Portland area sweltered in 90-degree conditions, Leoni said
the low sixties of the early afternoon were absolutely perfect. By late
afternoon, the entire coastline was cooking a bit in the upper 60’s
and no wind.
“We did see a small spike in drop-ins the last couple of days,” said Danielle Emerick, who runs Starfish Point in Newport.

Beach Visitor Center, employees there say it’s been busy the
last few days. “Everyone wants to know why it is colder and what
is the forecast for the next couple of days,” said a spokesperson.

The center said it had a total of 62 calls on Tuesday. They spoke to BeachConneciton.net on Wednesday and said numbers were getting close that day. “We have had 53 but still have about two hours to go. We had over 200 people in the Visitor's Center Tuesday and will do about the same today.”
In Manzanita, Brian Hines said things have been a little slow at his cozy little motel, San Dune Inn. But something is up. “Most of the walk-ins have been from out of state or overseas passing through,” he said. “Less than 10 percent were Portlanders. So they haven't been playing hooky.”

“It’s been gorgeous,” said Marsella Charron, manager of wine bar Yachats Wine Trader. “Warm, with a light breeze.”

Although business was slow and no real flood of tourists appeared, Charon spotted some wonders that should draw more people out to the Oregon coast. “Whales!! We have been watching them all day. They like to hang out at the point in front of the wine bar. We have the perfect spot for whale watching.
“We also have a bald eagle that has been fishing on the bay in front of us. He is usually around all summer, and if you are lucky, you can see some ‘Discovery Channel’ type action.”
Hines sees a big weekend for this first one of June. “With the weather predicted to be great per reports at the beginning of this week, the weekend currently sees us about half full,” Hines said.
In Yachats, Charon believes there will be many heading to the beaches to enjoy what is likely a stellar weekend of sun and fun. “It’s been quiet, but it could be calm before the storm,” Charon said.
