North Oregon Coast Town To Test Tsunami Sirens
(Seaside,
Oregon) - On April 24, the sirens will blare in Seaside, as visitors and
residents alike will have the chance to take part in a citywide voluntary
tsunami evacuation drill.
The drill begins at 10 a.m. in the north coast town, which
has some of the most to lose of many Oregon towns when that dreaded event
finally takes place, as much of Seaside’s downtown area actually
lies on a downward slope from the ocean.
The city’s new public address system will make an
announcement at the beginning of the drill. Once the drill begins, the
emergency sirens will be activated and the city is encouraging voluntary
evacuation practice for all those who wish to participate.
The
wavering siren will begin low and then modulate with an up and down pitch
for three minutes. As part of this drill, participants are encouraged
to have emergency kits and evacuation supplies ready, be aware of tsunami
safe zones, and proceed to them as soon as possible.
Officials urge to practice your evacuation route on foot
and do not drive.
“We feel that it is important to inform visitors
that this is only a drill,” said the City of Seaside in a press
release. “We also would encourage that they be asked to not be in
close proximity to the emergency sirens, as the sound will be very loud.”
City
officials say hotel guests interested in participating in this voluntary
drill should be educated by the lodgings.
“Please educate them as to the proper way to evacuate
which is calmly and on foot,” the press said to local businesses.
“Ask them to leave their cars parked and give them directions to
their evacuation zone. We would also encourage you to remind your guests
on Friday, April 24 prior to 10 a.m. that the Voluntary Tsunami Evacuation
Drill is about to occur.
“Seaside takes pride in being one of the most prepared
cities in Oregon. Thank you in advance for your participation.”
