(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Two rescues on the north Oregon coast required both the US Coast Guard and Cannon Beach Rural Protection Department (CBRPD) along with Cannon Beach firefighters and rescue swimmers. A man and his son became trapped in the waters off Indian Beach and a hiker who had fallen 25 feet down a ravine were just two of the calls rescuers responded to on Sunday.
Rescue personnel from Cannon Beach and the US Coast Guard first came together at an area around Ecola View Point, for a call about two males stuck in the water.
“Air Station Astoria received reports from Seaside Dispatch about a father and son caught in the currents off Indian Beach,” the USCG said. “A concerned bystander reported seeing the pair drifting north before losing sight of them.”
According to CBRPD, the males were two boogie boarders that had started at Indian Beach.
USCG said first an “Urgent Marine Information Broadcast” was issued. Luckily, there was already a helicopter from Air Station Astoria in the area on a training flight, so it was diverted to assist. Local water rescue teams from Station Cape Disappointment were called in as water teams were en route from Seaside and Cannon Beach.

“Due to the rapid response from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, our swimmers were put on standby while the USCG helicopter was able to locate and safely remove the victims from the rocks,” Cannon Beach officials said.
The victims were then taken to a landing zone ar Ecola State Park, at the main viewpoint. There they were evaluated by EMT's.
Shortly after, Cannon Beach firefighting personnel were called to Saddle Mountain in the Oregon Coast Range, assisting Hamlet Volunteer Fire Department with a rescue on the trail.
“Upon arrival, Cannon Beach Firefighters along with Hamlet Fire, Seaside Fire & Rescue, and Medix Ambulance Service hiked roughly 1.5 miles up the trail to find the injured victim 25’ down a small ravine,” they said.
Rescuers managed to set up a rope system to climb down the steep drop-off and reach the victim. They stabilized the individual and used the rope system to pull them out of the precarious spot. Rescuers loaded the victim into a stoked basket and hiked the rest of the way back down the trail to an ambulance.
“The victim was then transported to the landing zone where they were transferred to Life Flight for further treatment and transport,” CBRPD said.
Being a holiday weekend and exceptionally nice weather apparently kept rescuers busy – and they had smaller numbers because some were helping out in California.
“In addition to these two calls, Cannon Beach Firefighters also responded to several other emergencies,” CBRPD said. “Not to mention, we still have four of our firefighters deployed to the Palisades Fire in Southern California.”
