Oregon Coast Weather Likely to Stay Warm Through October Published 08/19/2011 (Oregon Coast) – That irresistible combo of blue skies, little wind and warm temps on the Oregon coast seems likely to continue through the middle of October, according to a variety of indicators. As the Portland area gets ready for its first run of sweltering weather this weekend, that may shift a bit on the beaches. But otherwise, the coastal region will very likely stay beautiful and sunny for the next two months. Above: it's been bikini and cabana conditions in places like Cannon Beach. The National Weather Service in Portland confirms that the current atmospheric conditions that have kept the beaches blue and beautiful look like they will continue until Labor Day Weekend. After that, the Oregon coast is infamous for a holding pattern of largely magnificent weather that’s been called the “second summer,” with temperatures usually lingering around 70 degrees or more and little wind until around the middle of October.
The weather data for the last month or more on the coast says much: skies have been primarily clear since early July. Some on the coast have said it’s the best summer they’ve seen in this region: 180 degrees from the dreary cloud cover of last summer, which was nicknamed the “bummer summer.” “We have had sun everyday,” said Judy Joubert, owner of Stone Crest Cellars BnB near Newport. “It has been the most amazing and mild summer I have ever experienced in my ten years on the coast. Smooth ocean, slight breeze or still.” The Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City has been keeping a log of conditions and confirms that since at least August 1 conditions have been sunny and clear, with the exception of a few mornings when there was cloud cover and perhaps some drizzle, but all that eventually burned off to open skies.
At the National Weather Service office in Portland, senior meteorologist Treena Hartley acknowledged the forecast calls for similar conditions on the coast through Labor Day. “Doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon, so I think it’s safe to say,” Hartley said. Considering the current pristine conditions will last into early September, it’s a safe bet to say that with September and October’s penchant for good weather the Oregon coast is looking at quite a continued stretch of lovely skies. It could well mean the majority of the next two months will be very similar to conditions now - well into October.
