Washington Coast, South Oregon Coast Under Air Quality Alerts

(Coos Bay, Oregon) – Smoke from the Cedar Creek Fire along with easterly winds are creating uncomfortable situations for most parts of the Pacific Northwest, with, the eastern halves of Washington and Oregon faring better along with a couple slices of the Oregon coast. Otherwise, everything west of the Cascades – including much of the south Oregon coast and all the Washington coast – are under air quality alerts for a day or more. Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued the various alerts. They also include much of SW Washington, Portland and the Willamette Valley.
The alert is in effect for the south Oregon coast through Saturday night, including Florence, Reedsport, Coos Bay and Bandon. DEQ has issued an air pollution advisory for Coos County.
“Air Quality is expected to reach unhealthy levels at times within Coos County,” DEQ said.

Smoke levels can change rapidly depending on the weather. You can check oregonsmoke.org to check in real time as conditions do shift.
“Smoke can irritate the eyes and lungs and worsen some medical conditions,” DEQ said. “People most at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and pregnant people.”
All of the Washington coast – from Long Beach through the Puget Sound – is under an air quality advisory through 5 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) along with DEQ said you should protect yourself and your family when smoke levels get high.
“Stay inside if possible. Keep windows and doors closed. If it’s too hot, run air conditioning on recirculate or consider moving to a cooler location,” the NWS said. “Avoid strenuous outdoor activity.”
Using high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can help.
You should be aware of the smoke issues in your area.
