Oregon Coast Restaurants Spread Their Wings

(Oregon Coast) – There's a new upscale eatery in Depoe Bay, and another famous one in Cannon Beach is headed to New York for a special dinner.

In Depoe Bay, Restaurant Beck opened up earlier this summer in the Whale Cove Inn building. They offer new American cuisine with an emphasis on local northwest products, said owner Chef Justin Willis. The focus is on seasonal ingredients and the menu changes frequently. Also featured are creative wine and craftbrew lists.

Wills said he prides himself on the concept of farm to table; products from many local Oregon farms are prominent on the menu at Restaurant Beck.

The restaurant overlooks the secretive Whale Cove, where whales can often be seen cavorting.

Chef Wills, a native of Iowa, is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Having lived in Oregon for the last four years, he has developed a passion for regional, northwest ingredients.

Restaurant Beck serves dinner Wednesday thru Monday starting at 4:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended however walk-ins are always welcome.

In Cannon Beach, it’s now the fourth time that Chef John Newman of Newman’s at 988 will be hosting dinner at the James Beard House in Manhattan, New York. The event will take place on August 27, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Sous Chef Faitha Hearing and Pastry Chef Nancy Williams will accompany Chef John, representing the team from Newman’s at 988. The meal will spotlight organic food and wine from Oregon.

Newman will  be accompanied by Oregon chefs Jonathan Hoffman of Arch Cape Inn and Retreat, Uriah Hulsey of the Columbian Café, and Chris Holen of Baked Alaska. Winemakers Barbara Steele of Cowhorn Vineyard, Athena Pappas of Boedecker Cellars, and Aaron Coe of Casa Bruno LLC will be in attendance along with Jim Wells from Oregon Wild Edibles and Jeff Trenary from Kingfisher Farms.
