(Lincoln City, Oregon) – January's chilly drama is just part of the allure on these beaches, with stormwatching being the big draw in places like Lincoln City and Cannon Beach. This time of year it always gets cheaper on the Oregon coast, but some places dive down even farther. (Above: Looking Glass Inn, Lincoln City)

Even so, rock-bottom special deals at hotels and such are a bit of a holy grail just before the Valentine's season kicks in. In Cannon Beach and Lincoln City, Westover Inns has a handful of lodgings that are touting some rad rates through the end of January.

In Lincoln City's Taft district, right across from Siletz Bay, you can perch yourself on the second floor and check out all the oceanic melee and frolicking of sea beasties like seals and sea lions. The cool thing is since it's famously pet friendly, you can bring your own furry friend to watch the proceedings.

Looking Glass Inn has been the go-to place in this area for a couple of generations now – for reasons just like that. It's gotten markedly cheaper for this month, according to company spokesman Heather Zink.

“Looking Glass has bay view, two-queen studios for $89 midweek and ocean and bay view King Whirlpool Suites for $99 midweek,” she said. “Through the end of January excluding 1/19.”

It's a Cape Cod-style inn, just steps away from a sometimes raucous beach that's usually perfect for walking, exploring, building sand castles, and playing in the water. However, during stormier moments – like you find in January – you can watch massive waves slowly nudge those enormous chunks of driftwood onto shore.

You can choose from an array of room options, including whirlpool tub suites, one-bedroom deluxe suites, two-bedroom fireplace suites, or suites with two queen beds, a living area, and two bedrooms. The Looking Glass Inn is within close walking distance to a variety of shops and well-known restaurants, many of which are less than a block away. 861 SW 51st Ave. Lincoln City, Oregon. 800-843-4940. www.lookingglass-inn.com

Right in the center of the central Oregon coast town, the Shearwater Inn is a luxurious hotel overlooking the D River beach with stunning ocean views. There's a classic vibe to this place: giving it an atmosphere that blends modern with sometimes historic elements, creating a unique upscale experience.

Some of these rooms are going for extraordinarily cheap this month.

“Shearwater Inn has partial ocean view King Standards for $89 midweek and ocean view King Studios for $99 midweek through the end of January,” Zink said.

That also excludes the holiday night of 1/19.

Guests here can enjoy spacious rooms and suites, complete with gas fireplaces, decks, easy beach access, an outdoor hot tub, and numerous dog-friendly options. Many rooms provide panoramic ocean vistas. Each room features a flat-screen TV, DVD player, wireless internet, and some suites come equipped with full kitchens. 120 NW Inlet Court. Located at the northern end of Lincoln City, Pelican Shores Inn offers up a breathtaking view with every room. You're close to the cliff's edge in full sight of rolling surf and just steps away from one of the area's more secluded beaches.

All this is a bit less in January, too. Zink said once again: Sundays through Thursdays see a huge price drop for the month.

“Pelican Shores Inn has 'Stay 2 nights or more midweek for $89 per night' in an oceanfront King Deluxe Studio,” she said.

Again, the only blackout date there is January 19.

Newly renovated suites, some featuring oceanfront patios or gas fireplaces, come with free Wi-Fi, DVD players and and kitchens. King studios boast sliding glass doors that open to oceanfront patios at lawn level. For your nighttime enjoyment, the surf is illuminated. Guests will also get to dig into a heated indoor pool, complimentary continental breakfast, a large selection of DVDs for rent, guest laundry, and barbecues. 2645 NW Inlet Ave. 800-705-5505. www.pelicanshores.com

On the north Oregon coast, in Cannon Beach, the Tolovana area is laidback and yet dramatic at the same time. During the winter, a lot can happen here, especially when storms bring the tides right up to the edge of the walkway, knocking objects around and creating a spectacle. There are rather chilling moments after storms you can see the wheelchair ramp completely filled with ocean debris and the insane power of it becomes clear.

Just across the street from all this sits The Wayside Inn, a longtime family favorite in this lovely locale. It's a charmer and well-known for being rather inexpensive as well – not to mention dog-friendly.

It gets even cheaper this month, especially family-oriented units.

“The Wayside Inn has ocean view Two-Queen Studios for $89 midweek and ocean view One-Bedroom King Suites for $99 midweek,” Zink said.

You'll get to enjoy ocean view rooms and suites, gas fireplaces, small kitchens (many with ovens), flat screen TVs, complimentary Wi-fi, and decks. After a day at the beach you can take a swim in the heated indoor pool or soak in the spa. 3339 S. Hemlock Street, Cannon Beach, Oregon, 888-659-6397. www.thewayside-inn.com
