Central Oregon Coast Town Celebrates Women's History Month Published 03/06/2011 (Lincoln City, Oregon) – Women's History Month takes over the calming sands of Lincoln City in March, providing a wealth of cultural events and celebrations throughout the central Oregon coast town. You’ll find cooking classes, live performances and art exhibits all over the area. March 12th: The Life of Alice Day Pratt. Cathy Alzner, a women's historian, comes to Lincoln City with a presentation that illustrates the life of Alice Day Pratt, a teacher who was forty years old in 1912 when she set out on her own to homestead in Oregon. Pratt loved teaching but she longed to "own a portion of the earth's crust in my own right and to tamper with it unrestrained," as she would later write. She researched land availability and dry land farming techniques and chose Oregon to begin her adventure. She eventually moved to New York and published her experiences of ranching in rugged Oregon in national magazines and in books. North Lincoln Historical Museum on March 12 at 1 p.m. Free admission. March 12: Flying By the Seat Of Your Pants. Author and business consultant Chris Waugh. When Waugh took up hang gliding, women were considered too weak and fragile to pilot the giant kites. Even the training classes focused on the brawn of a male pilot. So Chris decided to use her brains and finesse instead of brute strength, and she learned to "sky out" above the boys. When Chris decided move up the proverbial ladder in her career, she ran into a similar male mentality. They were again too weak and emotional, and they couldn't think like a man. Once again, Chris set out to prove that a woman's brains and emotional finesse can enable her and other women to soar above the competition. The session will focus on how playing the game like a woman is the key to success. Lincoln City Cultural Center at 10 a.m. in the auditorium. $10 donation requested. March 12. Poor Little Rich Girl. The 1917 film with Mary Pickford as Gwen, who's rich family and even the servants ignore her and treat her poorly in this silent classic. Bijou Theatre, 11 a.m., $2 March 12. Julia Child Cooking Demo at Oregon Coast Culinary Arts Center. Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Instructor: Chef Liz Lesesne. Menu: Artichauts au Naturel a la Beurre au Citron (steamed artichokes with lemon butter,) Coquille St. Jacques a la Parisienne (scallops and mushrooms in white wine sauce,) Salad a la Chevre (green salad with goat cheese,) Le Marquis (chocolate sponge cake with buttercream icing). Saturday 4 p.m. Paulann Petersen is a former Stegner Fellow at Stanford University whose poems have appeared in many publications including Poetry, The New Republic, Prairie Schooner, and Wilderness Magazine. She has four chapbooks: Under the Sign of a Neon Wolf, The Animal Bride, Fabrication, and The Hermaphrodite Flower. Her first full-length collection of poems, The Wild Awake, was published by Confluence Press in 2002. A second, Blood-Silk, poems about Turkey, was published by Quiet Lion Press of Portland in 2004. A Bride of Narrow Escape was published by Cloudbank Books as part of its Northwest Poetry Series in 2006. Kindle was published by Mountains and Rivers Press in 2008. Her latest book, The Voluptuary, was recently published by Lost Horse Press. Her work has been selected for the web site Poetry Daily and for Poetry in Motion, which puts poems on buses and light rail cars in the Portland metropolitan area. The recipient of Oregon Literary Arts' 2006 Holbrook Award, Paulann has taught a number of poetry workshops for colleges, libraries, and writers' conferences. March 19. Hands-On In Nonna’s Kitchen – a Pasta Workshop at Oregon Coast Culinary Arts Center. Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Instructor: Chef Pati D'Eliseo. Class: In Italy, no one cooks as well as the mother or the grandmother of the family, and they pass down their talents to the young women of the family. Menu: Chef Pati will share three different pastas from 3 regions: Semolina Gnocchi from Lazio, Linguine with Pesto from Liguria, and Spiral-shaped Cannelloni from Trentino-Alto Adige. Presented by Diane Disse the lecture is about Mary Bensell, who recently authored historical novel about her life, entitled “The Edge Mary Bensell” is notable in the early settlement of what is now Lincoln County. Bensell was the first white woman to live in the area, she was an abused woman, and she divorced the man she came with to the area. She then married an important figure in the continuing history of settlement around Yaquina Bay. Disse will speak about Mary Bensell's life and the process of writing about her through research and an informed imagination. She also will discuss the role of personal experience in writing and the wide variety of traditional sources available as well as the Internet. The free program will begin at 1 p.m. and is hosted by the North Lincoln Historical Museum at 4907 SW Hwy 101, in Lincoln City. March 26. Hands-On Tamales. Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Instructor: Chef Graciela Polley. Chef Polley will teach how in women of her family have been making tamales for generations. Cost: $50, meal and wine included.
