National Fundraising Bike Tour Begins in Oregon
Coast Tourist Resort
(Seaside,
Oregon) – On the first day of summer - June 20 - a group of about
40 avid cyclists will fly from Boston to Portland, Oregon, to ready themselves
for a 3800-mile cross country bicycle ride that begins at Seaside, Oregon,
and will last over nine weeks. The group, 10th Gear Christian Youth Cyclists,
is riding to benefit the Jett Foundation of Pembroke, MA, an organization
founded to combat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
Essentially, the group will ride across the country for
those who can’t ride.
The ride is called “10thGear JettRide” and
is part of their 2007 Explore America Tour (EAT). It is affiliated with
the Village Congregational Church in Whitinsville, MA and the Boy Scouts
of America.
DIVE
INTO LUXURY, HISTORY AT THE TIDES

THE
TIDES BY THE SEA, Seaside. For over 80 years a favorite of Seaside
visitors. 51 oceanfront condos, individually owned and decorated.
Suites for couples, small apartments with fireplaces and kitchenettes,
one or two bed family units with fireplaces, kitchens and dining
rooms. Oceanview cottages sleep anywhere from two to eight, w/ two
bedrooms, some with lofts, fireplaces and kitchens. Heated outdoor
pool, enormous grounds w/ picnic tables - all at quiet southern
end of Seaside. 2316 Beach Drive. 800-548-2846. www.thetidesbythesea.com. |
They will spend a couple days in Seaside, and then on June
23 will embark from the town to Portland for the first leg of their long
journey.
The riders
will literally be dipping their rear bike wheels in the Pacific Ocean
at Seaside to begin the long ride, and their front wheels will be dipped
in the Atlantic Ocean at the finish. The cyclists hope to help Jett and
Project Catalyst, a research program of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy,
reach their one million dollar goal during their stops at churches and
local organizations, and through supporters’ contributions at an
online website, www.jettfoundation.org. The ride is still open to sponsors.
While they are cycling, the riders will encourage contributions
for those who cannot ride themselves, boys and young men affected by DMD,
a fatal muscle wasting disease that disables them in their teens and usually
claims their lives by the time they are 20. There is no known cure, but
recent clinical trials have been hopeful, and more funds will help develop
these treatments that can delay the condition’s worst symptoms until
a cure can be found.
 “We
are thrilled that 10thGear has taken on the Jett Foundation as their fundraising
cause this summer to benefit much needed research to combat DMD,”
said Christine McSherry, Jett Foundation president. “On behalf of
my family and all of the 5,000 others in the United States whose boys
are waiting for drug breakthroughs, we are deeply appreciative of 10thGear’s
efforts and wish them Godspeed.”
