NW Oregon, Coast Sweltering in Record Heat
|
Traffic jams in northern Newport |
(Manzanita, Oregon) – A heat advisory for western
Oregon has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), covering
I-5 corridor towns like Portland and Salem, but also including the coast
range and cities along the Oregon coast.
That’s not something you see everyday for the coastal
region, which is usually in the 50’s or 60’s if the valley
is sweltering. Temperatures are reaching into the 90’s on Friday.
As of noon, the NWS said Newport was at 93, Florence at 95 and Tillamook
was at 91.
By 4 p.m., Newport and Depoe Bay are reporting in at around
98 degrees, causing one tourist to complain it’s hotter on the coast
than in Portland.
Brookings, on the extreme southern coast, reached a mortifying
high of 105 degrees Thursday.
|
Crystal clear skies and hot temps on the coast Friday
will turn to fog and temps in the 60's this weekend |
The NWS’s heat advisory remains in effect until 8
p.m. tonight.
“A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures
is expected,” said the NWS in a bulletin. “The combination
of hot temperatures with elevated humidities will combine to create a
situation in which heat illnesses are possible.”
The NWS said you should drink plenty of fluids, wear light
clothing, hats and sunscreen, and stay in an air-conditioned room, if
possible. “Stay out of the out of the sunshine during the heat of
the day,” said the NWS.
They also advise to check up on relatives and neighbors,
especially the elderly.

Pacific City's Cape Kiwanda shines especially bright
during sunny days |
Temperatures will drop dramatically on the coast on Saturday,
while Portland and the valley will remain in the low 90’s to high
80’s throughout the day. Sunday will see a drop into the 80’s
for Portland, Salem and other valley towns.
“Humidities in the afternoon will be around 25 or
30 percent,” said the NWS. “The coast will see cooling tonight
as winds switch to the south and a marine layer develops. Inland will
continue to be quite warm Saturday, but nearly as hot as today as the
marine air starts to seep inland, with highs in the mid 80’s to
near 90.”
Meanwhile, the coastline is enjoying its moments in the
sun – quite literally. Traffic is a madhouse in places like Newport,
and most lodgings are reporting a bevy of calls or walk-ins from heat
refugees from the valley.
|
The northern end of Seaside will be a good place to
get away from the crowds, as it's usually quite empty |
The San
Dune Inn in Manzanita is almost completely booked up for the weekend.
All but one of its 14 rooms have been snagged by those who discovered
how hot things were going to get, said owner Brian Hines.
“They were mostly booked up Wednesday and Thursday,”
he said.
In Newport, Danielle Emerick said she’s gotten a
lot of walk-in traffic from people already on the coast, and at least
one call asking to be notified if she gets a cancellation at Starfish
Point, which she manages. She said some are desperate to find places
to stay.
The
condo-hotel overlooks Agate Beach, near Yaquina Head.
“They’re loving it, though,” she said.
“The beach is packed. There’s a lot of people on the beach,
much more than normal. And there’s a lot of people in the water.
They never get in the water here, without a wet suit.”
|
Depoe Bay: the big weather surprise about
the region is that ocean conditions are too rough for fishing because
of big winds, in spite of hot temps |
For A-1
Beach Rentals in Lincoln City, the story isn’t quite the same.
Owner Rose Scrutton said they were already booked up weeks in advance,
and have just a few condo units left. But they’re not getting many
calls from those desperate tourists.
“It’s a lot of money for a last-minute thing,”
Scrutton said. “We had one call that said that.”
Not many calls have been coming in to Trollers
Lodge in Depoe Bay, said owner Rick Leoni. But they were fairly full
to begin with.
Most guests there were in town to go fishing, and they’re
a little grumpy.
|
Outdoor dining - like this one in Manzanita - will be
quite popular over the weekend |
“They’re just sitting in their rooms,”
he said. “They can’t go fishing because conditions are too
rough.”
Ironically, in spite of the massive heat of the central
coast, the winds are high, creating heavy surf that isn’t conducive
to fishing.
Still, the masses are descending on the coast quickly.
“Traffic is solid out there,” Emerick
said. “We had one guy come over last night from Portland, because
it’s not cooling off there at night. But he said it’s hotter
here than in Portland.”
