Recovery of Jet Fighter Off Oregon Coast is Invisible to Public

(Seaside, Oregon) – It’s been a tense and tragic 24 hours since the Oregon Air National Guard F-15A jet fighter crashed into the ocean, just off the north Oregon coast. But the recovery effort has been all but invisible to those in the north coast towns.
The body of the pilot was recovered late Tuesday evening, but the announcement was withheld until Wednesday at the request of the family. Flying the plane was Maj. Gregory D. Young, 34, of St. Helens, Oregon – a town just west of Portland.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel arrived at the debris field about 30 minutes after the incident. It sat about 40 miles off the north Oregon coast.

Some residents of towns like Seaside and Cannon Beach reported seeing a number of helicopters flying overhead throughout the day, but nothing else was visible to the general public.
Allen Sprague, who runs a scenic airplane ride called Aviation Adventures in Seaside, said he could see a flurry of activity on the horizon as he flew passengers in the 30-mile stretch between Cannon Beach and Astoria throughout the day.
There
was a no-fly zone issued for the airspace over the ocean, Sprague said,
but that didn’t affect his business.
“I think I saw about 12 helicopters and a half a dozen ships out there,” Sprague said. “But they were way out on the horizon, and barely visible.”
The Coast Guard has said it sent helicopters, two cutters and a C-130 aircraft. So Sprague believes there were civilian boats aiding in the recovery effort as well.
Shop owners in Seaside, like Flashback Malt Shoppe’s Gary Diebolt and Mike Exinger of Zinger’s Ice Cream, said no one has come into their businesses saying they could see anything of Coast Guard or military activity.

The Cannon Beach Police Department said it initially received a flurry of calls from media early in the incident, but that quickly stopped as they realized the police department there had nothing to do with the recovery.
The national and regional media has been using Cannon Beach as a reference point, but the reality is that the debris field was 40 miles away from any of the towns in that 15-mile stretch that includes Arch Cape, Cannon Beach and Seaside.

Media coverage on the incident is quick to point that no one should touch anything if a piece of the debris should wash up in the area. Neither the Cannon Beach Visitor Center or the Cannon Beach Police Department have received any official warnings from the Coast Guard or National Guard on this, asking them to pass that along to visitors. But a spokesman for the Cannon Beach police said it is just common sense you shouldn’t touch such an item.

urge the public to call authorities immediately if they find anything
on the beaches.
Sprague
said that area of the coast is notorious for objects washing up, such
as the cannon after which Cannon Beach was named about 100 years ago.
That cannon came from a ship that wrecked in the bay near Astoria.
“You shouldn’t touch it all, if something washes up,” Sprague. “It could hurt their ability to find out why the plane went down. That might put somebody else’s life at risk in the future.”
Cannon Beach police say there has been no report of anything washing up.
