Massive Jazz Fest Will Coax Hundreds to Oregon Coast This Weekend

(Newport, Oregon) - It will be four days of pure heaven for jazz fans, bringing hundreds of them to the central Oregon coast this weekend for one of the biggest, most extensive jazz festivals in the northwest.
At least ten places in the dreamy, laidback town of Newport will be turned into live jazz venues for the Jazz at Newport Festival on September 4, 5, 6 and 7.
It's action-packed each of the four days, with something happening every hour of the day Friday and Saturday of the festival, including a constantly revolving roster of "sessions," workshops and talks, as well as bigger concerts.
Many shows take place at the Newport Performing Arts Center (PAC), but numerous other places around Newport will be turned into jazz venues for the weekend for the Jazz Around Town feature of the Jazz at Newport Festival.

Thursday, September 4 is opening night of the festival, with a special performance at 8 p.m. by Dave Frishberg, Tom Wakeling, Gary Hobbs, Ken Peplowski and Houston Person. This happens at the PAC.
Friday, September 5 begins the jazz guitar clinic sessions at 9:45 a.m., and a Jazz Conversation at 11 a.m. with vocalist Kevin Mahogany.
Session Performances (or Afternoon Jazz Samplers), start
at 2 p.m. and continue all day and night, until the “Nightcap Set”
at 10 p.m. A different performer or configuration of performers hits the
stage every hour.
The Continental Breakfast Set starts things off on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.,
along with a clarinet/tenor sax jazz clinic at 10:15 a.m. A jazz conversation
with trumpet player Terell Stafford also starts at 10:15.

Like Friday, the Afternoon Jazz Samplers begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue all day, with the last show wrapping up at midnight.
On Sunday, there’s a “Jazz Brunch” at the Shilo Inn, which features Portland outfit Tall Jazz at 10 a.m. The International Association for Jazz Education Student Quintet performance takes place at the PAC at 12:15 p.m., and an all-stars local jam session ends the festival, going from 1 to 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Jazz Around Town kickstarts at 5 p.m. on Friday, 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sunday, at the other venues around town.
Prices and ticket packages vary greatly, depending on general admission, members of Oregon Coast Council for the Arts or if you’re a student. Single shows at the NPAC are around $40 for general admission or $10 for students. Full passes are around $390. See website, www.jazzatnewport.org for exact ticket prices for each day or show.
