Seasons Bring Railroad and Arts Fun to Oregon
Coast
(Oregon
Coast) – May and the fall months will provide an extra thrill for
two kinds of people: those in love with old railroads and steam engines,
and those with a passion for arts and crafts. Two big arts festivals are
announcing their dates for spring and fall in the Yachats area, and Oregon
Coast Steam Adventure will take to the rails for a zesty trip through
time, along the rails of the north coast.
In spring and fall, the Oregon Coast Steam Adventure will
embark on a tantalizing daylong journey that starts in Garibaldi, and
then it will zoom over a stretch of tracks that have not seen steam locomotives
since the fifties. The spring run is set for May 17, from 10 a.m. to 7:30
a.m. Another happens October 4.

It all begins Lumberman’s Park in Garibaldi. The
first leg of the journey chugs up the Oregon coast, affording fantastic
panoramic views of both Tillamook Bay and Nehalem Bay. Along the way,
catch wondrous views of Garibaldi, Barview, Ocean Lake Park, Twin Rocks,
Saltair, Tillamook Beach, Rockaway Beach, Lake Lytle, Manhattan Beach,
Haddon, Brighton Beach, Mohler, the Nehalem River, Foley, Batterson, Tunnel
37, Nehalem Falls, and conditions permitting, Salmonberry
The vintage train will eventually turn inland at Wheeler
and snakes through the Nehalem River canyon. Track conditions permitting,
it will continue on to Salmonberry.
After making a service stop, and a photo opportunity pass
or two, the Oregon Coast Steam Adventure will do it all again in reverse,
allowing for different lighting opportunities on the return trip from
the confluence of the Salmonberry and Nehalem Rivers, which lead to the
ocean.

Wheeler's scenic view from the rails |
“No other railroad in North America offers the range
of scenery found on the Tillamook Branch Line, and no train in recent
years has made it possible to experience it all behind steam power,”
said publicist Jill Watkins.
A
minimum of three photo flybys have been scheduled, with more to be added
if time permits. Lunch will be served at Nehalem Bay Winery, picnic-style.
Passengers will have the time to enjoy complimentary wine tasting and
do some shopping while there. Concessions will be available for purchase
onboard the train. Limited to less than 100 passengers, it is highly recommended
to make your reservations soon.
Cost for the train ride is $148 per person.

Crafts on the Coast Arts & Crafts Festivals. The 11th Annual Spring

Both juried gallery-quality events will be held inside
Yachats Commons, Hwy 101 at 4th Street in Yachats, Oregon.
Craftspeople, artists and specialty food producers are
encouraged to apply to these juried craft events. Each festival features
the widest variety possible of unique, high quality, distinctive handcrafted
products. Last year each show presented 65 exhibitors and attracted an
estimated 2,200-plus in attendance. While post participants are from Oregon,
exhibitors have also hailed from California, Washington, Idaho, Colorado,
Arizona and Nevada. First time exhibitors are encouraged to apply.
As
a community service, a free booth is offered to nonprofit groups that
create crafts as a way of raising funds for their organization. If your
group is interested, please call 547-4738 for more information and an
application.
Applications have recently been mailed to exhibitors currently
on the mailing list. Spaces are limited, so early application is encouraged.
The application deadline for the spring festival
is March 30; deadline for the November event is August 31. Both shows
are juried separately. Information packages include applications for both
events. An extensive local and regional advertising campaign is already
underway. Call 541-547-478 to request your application package.
