Sea Lion Attacked on North Oregon Coast

Oregon) – The public is warned to stay away from a California Sea
Lion that is resting on a north Oregon coast beach, nursing injuries after
apparently being attacked by a shark.
The warning is so serious that staff from the north coast’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network will not release the location, and they stress that anyone coming across it may be in danger because it is one disgruntled beast.

The 800-pound, eight-foot sea lion is a full grown male, said Keith Chandler, manager of the Seaside Aquarium and part of the network. “It’s about eight feet, but it wouldn’t let us get close enough to measure it,” he said.
Its right front flipper has been chewed off, with the bone showing. The injury is not life threatening, but the sea lion needs time to rest and heal.

said he got the report on Saturday from a surfer who was ready to go into
the water, then saw the sea lion charge out of the sea, bleeding profusely
along the way. The surfer decided not to go in the water after seeing
something having done that much damage.
Chandler believed it was a shark attack, and he didn’t blame the guy for not going back in the water. “It’s either of two things: an orca whale or a shark,” Chandler said. “If it was an orca, I don’t think there would be much left of the thing.”
Chandler and another staff member got out to the location later on Saturday to check on it and see how it was doing.
“It’s
hard to tell how it will heal,” Chandler said. “We don’t
know much blood it lost, and there’s always the possibility of infection.
But otherwise, those injuries are not life threatening.”
It should just wander back into the ocean on its own, when it’s ready and feeling better. In the meantime, Chandler urged anyone who might run across it to leave it alone. “It could be dangerous,” he said.
Chandler and staff have placed signs at the area, warning people to stay away and letting them know the creature is being monitored.
